Constructed as a Millennium Project by the City of Castlegar, the Millennium Walkway was officially opened on June 1, 2001. The project incorporates a 900 metre paved walkway with formal elements such as an entry gateway, a kiosk, an arched bridge, landscaped viewpoints with interpretive signs, and amenities such as benches and a washroom.
More recently a unique Natural Ponds Swimming Facility has been added with plans for bike park, an off-lease dog park, pickle ball, tennis, and beach volleyball courts to be constructed in 2016.
Located 45 minutes from Castlegar, just outside Nelson, Whitewater Ski Resort has an average snowfall of over 40 feet and is located along Canada’s Powder Highway, and nestled along the Selkirk Mountains. Skiers and riders will find a vertical of 2,044 ft. and access to 1,184 acres of accessible terrain. Whitewater features 81 named runs that include groomers, open bowls, chutes, glade and tree skiing. The terrain is rated 10% beginner, 32% intermediate, 47% advanced, and 11% expert. A terrain park will entertain the freestylers and Nordic and multi-use trails are also available.
Red Mountain is located 30 minutes from Castlegar and is the first stop along the famous “Powder Highway” – RED delivers 2,877 lift-serviced acres (4,200 total!) of pristine skiing unfettered by overdevelopment. With epic vertical (2,919 ft/890m!), in-bounds cat-skiing, wide-open groomers, 360-degree descents, a rich tradition, and—phew!—the BEST gladed tree runs in North America!

The Castlegar Nordic Ski Club has been providing well maintained cross country ski trails in the Paulson Recreation Area for the last 50 years.
With 45 km of packed and tracked ski trails ranging from beginner to advanced levels, the club hosts approximately 15,000 to 20,000 visitors every season. There are trails for everyone, including a popular 7.5 km circular route from Mud Lake to the Ben Shaw cabin that is ideal for young families and beginners, as well as several longer, more challenging loop trails for intermediate and expert skiers. An additional 8 kms of untracked trails are available for the more advanced backcountry skier.
Experience some of the best fly fishing in North America right here in the Kootenays. Living in Castlegar allows you to walk out your door and be fishing on the Columbia River within 20 minutes, however, if it’s a quiet lake you seek you’ll find them here too. But don’t take my word for it, hear it from an expert.
Access to hiking trails in the Castlegar area are everywhere. From the waterline trail right in the city to several trails built by the Friends of Parks and Trails only minutes from anywhere in the city, you’ll find everything you need, from just a casual hike to a more intense climb. So whether you have 20 minutes, or the day, you’ll find something to suite your needs.
A group of young mountain bike enthusiast are making things happen in Castlegar, building an accessible trail system for young and old, novice to expert. Slip out your back door after work to enjoy a quick ride while breathing in fresh mountain air, it doesn’t get much better. The West Kootenay Regional Airport is owned and operated by the City of Castlegar and offers regular service to both Vancouver and Calgary. It is 250km by road to the nearest alternate airport with scheduled passenger air carrier service.
Castlegar received the 2008 Energy Action Award from the Community Energy Association for the design of its new city hall.
The new city hall saves over 50% of the energy of a conventional building, cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 29 tonnes annually.
The Castlegar & District Community Complex is a multi-purpose facility that houses an Arena, a 6 lane, 25 meter pool and leisure pool, whirlpool, weight room, fitness studio, meeting rooms, banquet facility, kitchen and senior centre. Adjacent to the facility are four tennis courts, soccer/football field, ball diamond and skate boarding park.
