A group of young mountain bike enthusiast are making things happen in Castlegar, building an accessible trail system for young and old, novice to expert. From the waterline trail right in the city to several trails built by the Friends of Parks and Trails only minutes from anywhere in the city, you’ll find everything you need, from just a casual hike to a more intense climb. So whether you have 20 minutes, or the day, you’ll find something to suite your needs.
Experience some of the best fly fishing in North America right here in the Kootenays. Living in Castlegar allows you to walk out your door and be fishing on the Columbia River within 20 minutes, however, if it’s a quiet lake you seek you’ll find them here too. Kinnaird Elementary School (K-7) provides hands-on learning experiences in a caring, family atmosphere where parents and volunteers are welcome. We provide a variety of extra-curricular activities, which include outdoor gardening and a wetlands pond, and promote wellness and nurturing of the whole child.
Twin Rivers Elementary School (3-7) is a modern elementary school located in the downtown area of Castlegar. Twin Rivers, as a pilot this year, is offering early French Immersion (beginning in Kindergarten), as well as housing the Late French Immersion Program for grades 6 and 7. Castlegar Primary School (K-2) is located right next door to Twin Rivers and strives to develop foundations for lifelong learning and encouraging a strong connection between our school and the child’s home is imperative to our staff.
The Castlegar Nordic Ski Club has been providing well maintained cross country ski trails in the Paulson Recreation Area for the last 50 years.
With 45 km of packed and tracked ski trails ranging from beginner to advanced levels, the club hosts approximately 15,000 to 20,000 visitors every season. There are trails for everyone, including a popular 7.5 km circular route from Mud Lake to the Ben Shaw cabin that is ideal for young families and beginners, as well as several longer, more challenging loop trails for intermediate and expert skiers. An additional 8 kms of untracked trails are available for the more advanced backcountry skier.
